AI Trend Following Strategy

Trend following is the most documented systematic edge in finance. AI does not reinvent the math. It removes the busywork of drafting, validating, and stress-testing the rules so you can judge whether the edge is real.

Key Takeaways
  • 01 Trend following is a documented edge, but only with strict regime filters and drawdown control around the entry.
  • 02 TRION compiles your rules into inspectable DSL and cross-checks them for contradictions before you trust them.
  • 03 AI explains and analyzes; the deterministic risk engine enforces the caps. Humans decide.
  • 04 A backtest shows the past, not a guaranteed future. No confidence scores, no projected returns.
  • 05 Beta is paper-only and HOLD-only, so strategies are stress-tested before any live question arises.

In-depth analysis

What a trend-following strategy actually is

A trend-following strategy enters in the direction of established price momentum and exits when the trend weakens. The classic recipe pairs a fast moving average crossing above a slow one with an ADX filter to confirm trend strength and an ATR-based trailing stop. The entry is the easy part. The reason most retail trend systems lose is what surrounds it. No regime filter, no drawdown rule, no plan for sideways chop where a trend system bleeds on false signals.

Where AI helps in TRION

You describe the setup in plain English. TRION compiles it into deterministic DSL you can read line by line, and multi-worker AI checks that the entry, exit, and risk rules do not contradict each other. The AI explains what it found. It does not approve, activate, or execute anything. The deterministic risk engine enforces the position-size and drawdown caps regardless of what the model suggests. The backtest then runs against real historical data, including ranging periods that punish undisciplined trend systems, so you see the worst case rather than the best month.

Honest limits

A backtest is not a promise. A trend edge that held in past data can decay, and no filter survives every regime. TRION does not score your strategy with a confidence number or project returns, because those numbers would be invented. During Phase 2 Beta the runtime is paper-only and HOLD-only. That is exactly where a trend strategy belongs first. A good trend system has to survive a bad regime on paper before the question of capital is even worth asking.

What TRION adds

TRION adds a readable DSL layer and a deterministic risk engine on top of the AI. The model drafts and critiques your trend rules in plain language, but it never flips a switch. Position-size and drawdown caps are enforced by code the AI cannot override.

In Phase 2 Beta everything is paper-only and HOLD-only. There are no live orders, fills, or positions. You stress-test a trend strategy against real history and a simulated runtime first, and you stay the one who decides what happens next.

Frequently asked questions

What indicators does TRION support for trend following?

Standard set: EMA/SMA crossovers, ADX, MACD, Donchian channels, Supertrend, ATR for stops. You can chain them across timeframes.

How does TRION prevent trend systems from over-trading in chop?

The risk engine enforces a regime filter (e.g. ADX > 20 or EMA slope thresholds) before any entry signal is acted on. AI cannot override this.

Can I run a multi-asset trend portfolio?

Multi-asset portfolios are on the post-beta roadmap. Phase 2 Beta focuses on single-instrument strategies for BTC and ETH.
